| TABLE OF CONTENTS | Volume VIII, Number 2 MARCH/APRIL 1997 | COVER STORY TALKING TRASH - Recycling is Under Attack You pull out that jar of old spaghetti sauce from the back of the refrigerator. You find green fuzzy stuff all around the inside rim, take a whiff and almost get knocked over. It's another science experiment without a hypothesis--part of everyday life. As usual, you're in a hurry. What do you do? Conscientiously wash it out and place it in the recycling bin? Or just toss it into the garbage and get on with the day? We've all been there--experiencing quiet moments of pride and shame as we shape our relationship with the environment. By Alice Horrigan and Jim Motavalli FEATURES THE TIES THAT BLIND - Big Oil Goes Hunting for Electric Cars in California. If It Wins, We All Lose It was 8 a.m., September 16, 1996, and the red light was on in the studio of KSFO-AM in San Francisco. "Hot Talk" host Lee Rogers was doing his best to get his drivetime listeners (who, then as now, breathe the worst air in the United States) charged up by hurling some lightning bolts at electric cars. "I don't know how long it's going to take for the rest of the country to catch up to what the enviro-Nazis are trying to do to us," he shouted into the microphone, "but I expect some folks are going to wake up when they find out that the price of their new car is going to go up to subsidize a few rich idiots who want to buy electric cars that have been forced on the market by those crazies at the California Air Resources Board." By Jim Motavalli CONVERSATIONS ALLEN HERSHKOWITZ - The Natural Resources Defense Council's Dean of Recycling Practices What He Preaches Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), has spent the last 20 years up to his neck in garbage.
