| TABLE OF CONTENTS | Volume IX, Number 5 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 1998 | COVER STORY WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE - Innovation and Cooperation are Helping Slake the World's Growing Thirst The planet has been blessed with more freshwater than we could ever possibly need. But because this abundant resource is distributed unevenly on the planet, we are starting to run up against the limits of available freshwater in many parts of the globe.
By Elaine Robbins NO SAFE HAVEN - People With Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Are Becoming the New Homeless Though it's only recently begun to make headlines, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is not new: People have been reporting the symptoms of it on an increasing arc for the last 50 years, as our society has become more and more synthetic. Between 1940 and 1980, the production of synthetic organic chemicals increased from less than 10 billion pounds per year to more than 350 billion. In some ways, MCS is an allergy to modern life--a physical reaction to the common chemicals, ranging from detergents, pesticides, solvents and perfumes to foods and pharmaceuticals, that permeate our everyday existence. Less than one percent of the 1,000 new chemicals added each year have been tested for toxicity. CONVERSATIONS SANDRA POSTEL - The Coming Age of Water Scarcity She didn't start out as a guru, but since the publication of her book Last Oasis: Facing Water Scarcity (Norton) in 1992, Sandra Postel has become one. Now director of the Global Water Policy Project in Amherst, Massachusetts, Postel has become one of the world's leading authorities on how the world uses water, and how it can conserve for the future. "I've been involved in water issues since I left graduate school," Postel says. "I've always had this fascination with water and a feeling of connection to it. Maybe it has something to do with growing up near the ocean on the south shore of Long Island, but it's been my principal passion for a long time now." By Jim Motavalli and Elaine Robbins
