SIDEBAR: 12 TRENDS By Jennifer Bogo and Jim Motavalli FLYING HIGH, SWOOPING LOW - Assessing the Environmental Movement--at the Close of the "E Decade" The second issue of E Magazine coincided with Earth Day 1990, the 20th anniversary celebration of the first event and, in its own way, a landmark in environmental history. With its huge turnouts around the world, Earth Day 1990 proved that in the two decades since that first small Washington gathering, the environmental movement had grown enormously and become united in common goals. By Jim Motavalli 12 TRENDS - Wild Ideas for the New Millennium The classic late 19th/early 20th century environmentalism articulated by John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt and others didn't stray far from protecting the land and the species that live upon it. But as the 20th century wanes, the field has become far more crowded with issues, and complicated by our technological society. In our first edition of 2000, E offers a progress report on some of the movement's emerging trends. These issues, on the fringes a few years ago are, for better or worse, moving into the mainstream, and their momentum can't be denied. By Jennifer Bogo and Jim Motavalli CONVERSATIONS SANDRA STEINGRABER - Living Downstream and Fighting Back Biologist Sandra Steingraber, Ms. magazine's 1997 "Woman of the Year," has been called "a poet with a knife," cutting through the dry data of environmental contamination with a sharp wit reminiscent of Rachel Carson.
