| Photographers' Guidelines As the largest independent environmental magazine, with a circulation of 50,000,
E serves an important role as the voice for the environmental movement
and as a vital source on national and international coverage of environmental
issues. Founded in 1990, E is sponsored by Earth Action Network, a
nonprofit organization located in Norwalk, Connecticut. In an attempt to stay
consistent with our values and goals, we print our magazine on recycled paper
and screen our advertisers carefully.
- The specific focus of E is environmental activism. We are therefore
interested in photographs that will enlarge our readers' awareness of the
threats to our natural environment. We look for professional slides and
photographs that can be easily understood and tell a story.
- Please do not submit artwork unless accompanying a story and/or pertaining
to a specific photographic request.
- All photographic needs are based on editorial content.
- When sending four-color images, we prefer digital formats, which must be
at least 300 dpi and no less than 3 x 4 inches print size, unless otherwise
specified. JPEGs and TIFs are preferred, but other file types (GIFs, EPS) are
potentially acceptable. We prefer e-mail transmissions, although we can also
work with digital images on CDs or zip disks. 35mm slides or transparencies
are still acceptable: Send duplicate materials when possible. E cannot
be responsible for the loss/damage of original materials. We also accept
four-color, and occasionally, black-and-white photograph prints. Images should
be in clear focus and have good contrast. It is not necessary to screen the
photographs to convert into half-tones.
- The recycled paper stock on which E is printed tends to darken
photographs; clear, bright images reproduce best.
- MOST IMPORTANT: When you send photographs to E, please let us know
the following:
- To whom the photograph should be credited and/or if it is "courtesy of"
an organization or individual.
- Date, location, names of persons pictured, explanations of activities
portrayed and any further information we may need to include in the caption.
- Full return address, including name and phone number. All materials,
whether used or unused, will be returned soon after publication.
- We pay upon publication, and rates are negotiated individually (and
reflect our nonprofit status).
- Upon publication, please send E an invoice stating the amount
agreed upon for the use of your image and your social security number if you
are not incorporated.
- We do keep samples of photographers' work on file. PLEASE DO NOT SEND
SLIDES FOR REVIEW. We prefer nonreturnable samples (tearsheets, promotional
pieces, photocopies, etc.). Also, include photo stock lists and note areas in
which you specialize.
