Dear Editor and Humanitarians:
For those of you who were not here and those who have simply forgotten, this is what AWAKE Magazine had to say in 1952 about the darkest of all crimes, vivisection:
"Here, in the obscure quarters of the sacrosanct university, elegantly equipped by reason of a large endowment, is not only the house of horrors, but a hatchery for fiends that will soon find canine torture not enough for their progressively increasing lust to enjoy the pain of others...vivisectionists wicked and void of mercy.
Our contention is that the practice is morally wrong, that it violates divine principles, and hence cannot be reconcile to a Christian conscience, notwithstanding all of the highly publicized ends that are supposed to justify the cruel means... The Catholic Church has long championed the after-death torture of countless human souls in a 'hell' or 'purgatory' of fire and excruciating torment. There is nothing whatever out of harmony between those teachings and the belief that it is all right to torture dumb animals in 'scientific' laboratories...
Who are the powerful backers of vivisection? Who are those favoring the immorality of exploiting the helpless? Who nurtures the dangerous dogma that scientific research is exempt from the requirements of mercy and respect for life? The answer is a seriouis one...American universities, the American Medical Association...with crassly commercial motives, and a following of 'science worshipers', students, sadists and perverts make up the proponents of vivisection. Evidence of the monetary or perverted motives behind these horrid ranks are not lacking...Vivisection is a snare and a delusion."
Now, for those of you who NEED a reminder, there has been a HIDEOUS BETRAYAL of the above stand on vivisection (see AWAKE July 8, 1990). Fourteen years have passed. Are MILLIONS of you asking "what can ONE person do?"
