Java, Indonesia, the most populous island in the world, is reeling from the effects of drying land, leading farmers to turn to sand mining for quick income. Sand mining has taken a huge ecological toll on the island chain, speeding erosion and making the land more vulnerable to flooding. A fish seller comes in the afternoon to offer his wares to the miners.
